History
Anorthosis Famagusta, founded in 1911, is one of the oldest sports clubs in Cyprus with a history of participation and leading role in various sports. It represents the city of Famagusta (Ammochostos), which is now under Turkish occupation since 1974. Despite the fact that Anorthosis does not have access to its home city, it still remains one of the biggest clubs in Cyprus with a huge fanbase and presence all over the island.
The Basketball Team of Anorthosis was established in 1965 and played its first match in 1966, managing to win that year’s area championship of Larnaca – Ammochostos, but eventually losing in the final of the Cyprus championship to Digenis Morfou.
After the Turkish invasion in 1974 the club moved to Larnaca, however the financial difficulties that were experienced hindered the development of the team, which eventually withdrew its playing activities in the 1977-1978 season, thus halting its operations indefinitely. This was a blow both for the Anorthosis Club in general, as well as for the Cyprus Basketball Federation.
