Original Basketball Team
In 1965, The Anorthosis Basketball club was established by Giannakis Kostandinou. In 1966 they played their first official match, beating Pezoporikos BC by 70-48. That same year the club managed to win the Area championship of Larnaca – Amochostos, but eventually lost in the final of the Cyprus championship to Degenis Morfou club.
After the 1974 Turkish invasion, the club moved to Larnaca, but the financial difficulties that were experienced hindered the development of the team, which sometimes used players from the volleyball team to make up the numbers in games. Eventually the team withdrew its playing activities in the 1977-1978 season, thus halting its operations indefinitely. This was a blow for both the Anorthosis Club in general, as well as for the Cyprus Basketball Federation.
In 2015 Anorthosis Basketball Club re-established its activities that were halted after the Turkish Invasion of 1974. Starting with just 7 junior players under the age of 10 Antonis Mikellides and Sakis Passas put a vision together for Anorthosis Basketball club.
It was decided that the club would grow from grass root level and focus exclusively on the development of its players. Therefore the club initiated its Advanced Development Program (ADP), on which the foundation of the club’s activities are based on.
2017: Following the successful application of the Advanced Development Program, Anorthosis Basketball club now boasts 200+ players, of all ages. The club takes part in the corresponding U12 / U12 / U14 / U16 and U18 leagues both for men and woman. Anorthosis Basketball Club were the first to have U12 boys and U12 girls separate teams in the history of Cyprus Basketball. Further development in all age groups is taking place. Due to the clubs expansion the coaches have been increased from 2 to 7, as well as introduction of Managers and Administrative Staff.
